When I started HushLume, the obvious choices were plastic and wood.
Plastic is cheap, easy to source, and easy to work with. Wood looks warm and natural — it photographs well, it sells well. Both are everywhere.
That's exactly why I didn't use them.
If I made a wooden monitor riser, it would look like every other wooden monitor riser. If I made a plastic one, it would compete on price with factories that can produce ten thousand units a month. I can't win that game. I don't want to play it.
What drew me to acrylic was the feel of it — and the freedom it gives. Any color, any gradient, any finish. No other material lets you customize the way acrylic does. The color options are essentially unlimited.
There's also the light. Acrylic is optically transparent — light passes through it and interacts with the color in a way that no painted or printed surface can replicate. In the right light, a colored acrylic panel doesn't just sit on your desk. It glows.
That said, acrylic has its limits — and it's worth being honest about them. It's sensitive to sustained high heat: prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or heat sources can cause warping over time. It also scratches more easily than glass or metal. For cleaning, a soft dry cloth is all you need — avoid abrasive materials or harsh solvents, which can cloud the surface.
Paired with chrome-plated steel shafts and machined aluminum fittings, acrylic takes on a completely different character. The combination creates a minimal industrial aesthetic that neither material achieves alone. And the metal isn't just visual — hard steel and aluminum make the structure genuinely rigid and durable in a way that plastic or wood simply can't match.
The result is something that looks like it belongs in a different category entirely. That's what I was after.

Why We Didn't Choose the Easier Materials
Plastic and wood aren't bad materials. They're the right choice for a lot of products. But for what HushLume is trying to do, they were the wrong answer — and it's worth explaining why.
Plastic is optimized for scale. The economics only work when you're producing thousands of identical units. A small studio making one piece at a time can't compete on price, and shouldn't try. The moment you compete on price with plastic, you've already lost.
Wood is optimized for warmth. It's a beautiful material — but it's also a material that every furniture maker, every desk accessory brand, and every Etsy seller already uses. There's nothing wrong with a wooden monitor riser. There's also nothing distinctive about it.
Acrylic is optimized for customization. Any color. Any gradient. Any finish. The same structural form can look completely different depending on the panel — which means every piece can be genuinely unique without changing the manufacturing process. That's the only material property that makes sense for a studio that builds one piece at a time, to order, for a specific person.
The chrome steel and aluminum aren't a compromise either. They're the reason the structure works — rigid, precise, and durable in a way that wood joinery or plastic clips can't replicate. The combination of acrylic surface and metal structure is what makes the aesthetic possible. Neither material alone gets there.
